Oxford First Dictionary is a lively, colourful dictionary for children aged five years upwards. The selection of entries is based on extensive classroom research into words young children frequently come across in their reading and use in their writing and speaking. Younger readers will use this dictionary to see how familiar words are spelt, while more confident readers will look up a word for meaning.
Over 250 colour illustrations have been carefully chosen to suit the needs of children. They are beautifully drawn and entertaining, so that the very young will enjoy looking at the pictures and then progress to matching them to familiar words. Older children will find the illustrations indispensable when tackling new words and understanding written definitions. All illustrations are accurate and precise, and serve an important purpose in leading children to interpreting dictionary entries correctly.

Highlights:
  • 1,500 headwords in colour clearly and simply defined;
  • Example sentences to illustrate use and explain meaning;
  • The alphabet down every page to help young readers with alphabetical word order;
  • Special Picture Section contains more colour illustrations with identifying labels: Colours and Shapes, Opposites, Fruit, Vegetables, Flowers, Trees, Animals in the Wild, Dinosaurs, Farm Animals, Your Body, Transport, Days, Months and Numbers.
This dictionary also introduces children to simple grammar. It helps them to recognize that some words have plurals, some change their endings according to their tense, and others have comparative and superlative forms. They may also discover that a word can have several meanings or that the same word can be used in quite different ways. Oxford First Dictionary will develop early dictionary skills, as well as interest in the English language.
